The Rivers State House of Assembly has called on the state governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi to brace up for a second term come 2011 “following his landmark achievements in the state in a period of three years.”
The state legislative arm took this decision yesterday during a special legislative session in Port Harcourt to commemorate Amaechi’s 45th birthday and mark the opening of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians West African sub-region conference.
The motion, which was raised by the member representing Abua/Odual constituency, Hon. Henry Ogiri and seconded by Hon. Onari Brown of Akuku-Toru Constituency 11, was supported by the generality of the House.
In his speech, the speaker Hon. Tonye Harry said: “We hereby pass a vote of confidence on His Excellency, the Executive Governor Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi. He is a true ambassador of our legislature.
“We as members of the House pray for the success of his government. We are of the opinion that the governor should run for a second term. We don’t have any reason not to pass this motion.”
My question is this: Is it the duty of the Assembly to endorse a candidate by passing a motion on the floor of the house, and what is the implication of such an action on the outcome of the forth-coming election in the state?
