BROADCAST TO THE PEOPLE OF DELTA STATE, BY HIS EXCELLENCY, HON. SAM ONYEKA OBI, ACTING GOVERNOR OF DELTA STATE, IN RESPECT OF THE THURSDAY, 06 JANUARY , 2011 GOVERNORSHIP RE-RUN ELECTION IN THE STATE.

　
Beloved Deltans,

Delta State today stands at the cross road of it’s destiny- a destiny, which is in our hands to make or mar Tomorrow, Thursday, 6 January. 2011. All registered voters are expected to come out to cast their votes peacefully, for the candidate of their choice.

The election will put an end to the challenges thrown up by the court verdict of 9 November 2010. It is normal democratic process that should be carried out with understanding, peace, love, honesty and a deep sense of patriotism. However, the report reaching me from Ughelli North Local Government Area that the office of the lndependent National Electoral Commission has been torched by arsonists is unacceptable. Security agencies have been directed to get to the root of this crime and bring those responsible to justice.

All our religions teach love not hatred, universal brotherhood not enmity, peace not violence, progress and tolerance not bigotry. I therefore urge all our people not to exploit the re-run election to soil the good names of their families and that of our dear state. Our youths must avoid being used as thugs and canon fodder by desperate politicians. I call on parents to be watchful of the movement and activities of their children and wards throughout the period of the election.

I call on all politicians across the state to conduct themselves in a decent, decorous and peaceful manner. I sincerely appeal to candidates to prevail on their members and supporters to exercise restraint and conduct themselves in an orderly manner throughout the conduct of the election and beyond.

I urge security agencies to firmly enforce the strict compliance of the restriction on movement ordered by the state government. All those who break the restriction on movement of persons will be made to face the appropriate punishment. I should make it clear that anyone found to be disobeying the law or getting involved in anything capable of disturbing the peace, will be dealt with within the provision of the law. The law, l must emphasize, is no respecter of persons.

All Deltans should remain peaceful and prayerful. I once again appeal to candidates to continue to restrain their supporters and ask them to stay away from thuggery before, during and after the election.

The state is the only one we can call our own. It is therefore our collective responsibility to avoid anything capable of destroying the modest progress we have made in the sustainable development of our dear state.
