Delta State Consumer Protection Agency Bill Passes Second Reading.

The second reading of the Delta State Consumer Protection Agency bill has commenced at the State House of Assembly.

The second reading of the bill followed the motion moved by the sponsor of the Bill, Hon Sheriff Oborevwori representing Okpe Constituency and seconded by Hon Reuben Izeze representing Ughelli South Constituency.

Hon Oborevwori while proposing the bill said the intent of the consumer protection agency bill is to promote and protect the interest of consumers against exploitative tendencies of producers of goods and services.

He said by the bill, the consumers will have to be informed of the quality and standard of goods and services.

Hon Sheriff explained that the bill has 27 sections, adding that it would protect consumers from unfair practices, saying that the bill will help checkmate fake and adulterated products in the market.

Hon Izeze while supporting the motion said the bill will also assist in the area of litigation as it would give room for the settlement of disputes through arbitration between consumers and producers.

He said the agency will create offices in the twenty five local government areas of the state to enable people who live in the interior and interland to address complains arising from the use of products consumed.

The House adjourned to Tuesday next week to continue the debate.
