We won’t allow Jonathan emerge president” – Tanko Yakasai

The co-ordinator of Northern Elders Assembly, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, has expressed the determination of northern elders to prevent President Goodluck Jonathan from returning to the presidency.

Speaking to Daily Trust in Kano yesterday, the elder statesman said before considering supporting any other candidate, their main objective is to stop President Jonathan’s bid to return to Aso Rock.

“Our main concern now is to floor Jonathan and ensure that he does not contest. And we are doing our best to see that the presidency returns to the North,” he said.

He said the Northern Elders Assembly was in court challenging the right of President Jonathan to vie for the presidency. According to him, his group, alongside the Northern Political Forum, prayed the court to bar the president from contesting.

“I can tell you that even if the president scales through the hurdles, the North would consider another option,” Yakasai said.

Asked whether they were planning to support the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) retired General Muhammadu Buhari as their alternative, the Second Republic presidential aide noted that currently there was no plan of that nature. “Well, we have no plan to support any candidate but if the need arises, we will sit and deliberate upon the Buhari option,” he said.
