Delta State Deputy Governor, Prof Amos Utuama (SAN) has described traditional rulers as custodian of the customs and tradition of the people in their immediate community.
Prof Utuama stated this during the official presentation of Staff of Office to His Royal Majesty, Matthew Edirin Egbi, Owawho II, the Okobaro of Ughievwen Kingdom at Otu-Jeremi in Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State .
While congratulating him, he stated that royal fathers are expected to play the role of fathers to all their subjects and to discharge their duties without fear or favour, adding that they are known to be custodian of the tradition of the people.
He noted that the ascension of the Okobaro on the throne was divine and confirmed by the law, adding that government would continue to support the traditional institution to enable them function effectively in the state.
The Deputy Governor urged the new traditional ruler to work closely with the law enforcement agencies and the local government council to ensure the maintenance of peace and security in the domain.
He called on the traditional rulers to assist government in promoting the welfare of the people as well as enlightening and sensitizing the people on government programmes.
In a welcome address, the Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government Area, Barrister Dennis Oghenetaga Djoma, represented by the Vice Chairman, Chief Otidi Vincent pointed out that the presentation of the staff of office to his Royal Majesty Matthews Ediru Egbi marked the beginning of a new era in Ughiewen Kingdom.
Also speaking, the President-General of Ughievwen Union, Barrister Bernard Jamaho, stated that the event was to celebrate the heritage of royalty and dignity in the community.
Barriter Jamoho thanked the State Government for approving the installation of the new Okobaro, adding that it would help to boost good governance of the Uduaghan administration.
Dignitaries present at the occasion were the former Minister of State for Education, Dr. Kenneth Gbagi, former Minister of Education in the old Mid-Western Region, Chief Edwin Clark, former Military Administrator, Major General Ufeoma Omu, Civil Commissioners, Special Advisers and top government functionaries.
