Okowa aims to demystify opposition at home

The impression that Delta Central is the base of the opposition to successive Peoples Democratic Party, PDP administrations in the state is set to be tested in the forthcoming election given the determination of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and his associates to change that narrative.

Associates of the governor in the area have in recent days been sensitizing communities in the eight local governments through aggressive campaigns.

Last Tuesday, an estimated 1,000 former members of the All Progressives Congress, APC reportedly defected to the PDP at a campaign in Ughelli North, the base of the governor’s senior special assistant on political matters.

Delta Central has since 2003 been the base of the political opposition to the successive PDP administrations in Delta State.
It is the base of Great Ogboru (The Peoples General), Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and Chief Otega Emerhor.

It was also the base of the very popular and influential Urhobo leader, the late Senator Francis Ewherido who broke election records by becoming the first person to unseat the PDP from the Senate seat in 2011.

Senator Omo-Agege who came through his political machine repeated the same feat after he got the courts to uphold him as the winner of the 2015 Senate seat on the platform of Ewherido’s DPP.

Though the ruling PDP in the state is able to mobilise several prominent personalities from the area, the forthcoming local government election is being seen as a stage where the superiority of the PDP would be tested.

Seemingly convinced of the superiority of the PDP in the area, the governor in the course of a campaign stop at Ughelli had to chastise the opposition APC that the party was not marketing itself for the election.

“We are campaigning rigorously from one town to another, but they are at home, when we emerge victorious at the polls, they would be crying wolf.”
