WHEN A GOVERNMENT STOOPS SO LOW

— Why 2018 must not be painted with Gas Stations inaugurations
— Deltans need to see the Signature Project of this administration in the new year having performed abysmally in 2017.

By Ekwukwo Elvis

What a year!  How else can a year that started on a very low note end for a government that has redefined poor performance and has taken same to such a ridiculous high level. 2017, is year Deltans and all those that has a stake in her affairs cannot forget in a hurry. The year has been characterized with great achievements by  some State governments that deliberately decided to write their names in gold, however this feat cannot be said of our dear State.

The pettiness that dubbed this year for the administration of Dr Ifeanyi Okowa,  the Executive Governor of Delta State was taken to its zenith, when efforts were not spared by ensuring that the year ended on the low note it started. As we are left with few days before this year ends,  it's on record for the first time that we had a government that commissioned at least a Gas Station  (Filling Station)  every four month. It's instructive to note that when a government stoops some low,  invitations to come commission mundane projects,  that ordinarily would be befittingly commissioned by commissioners and some senior aides are extended to the Chief Executive of the State.

Is it not a shame that as early as 9th February 2017,  drums were rolled out by the State Government with a great funfair to commission North West Filling Station owned by Mrs Winifred Akpani  as a sterling achievement of the government. By 1st of August, 2017 the same State Government threw a wide celebration to commission yet another Filling Station,  this time Rain Oil Modern Station and shopping complex owned by Engr Gabriel Ogbechie and finally to cap the year that started with inauguration of gas station with inauguration of Gas station,  the Governor commissioned Falcon Bay Station at PTI Junction, Warri and a shopping complex on 19th December,  2017.The government against wise counsels from appropriate professional bodies in Engineering and Safety about the safety of the project situated almost under High Tension commissioned the project.

As we wish and pray for the government to get it right and better the lots of the people and the State,  this year has gone beyond redemption as we are left with few days to its wrap, however I want to urge the government to ensure that the new year,  those embarrassing stories of kindergarten projects and commissioning of private filling Stations that ridiculed Deltans should not be the hallmark of 2018. While Deltans wait for the opportunity to effect change come 2019,  the current administration should do more to rewrite the ugly face of the already battered image of the State that seem to forbid laudable projects that can attract National and International accolades.
Merry Christmas and Prosperous new year to you all.
