The Delta State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education will not pay for jobs that fail to meet the required standard and specifications.
This threat was given recently in Asaba by the state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Professor Patrick Muoboghare when he presented the proto- type of school desks prepared by the ministry’s officials and contractors.
Professor Muoboghare stated that before the ministry awarded the contracts for the procurement of schools’ furniture, the sample were displayed for them to see and replicate same but expressed worry on why some of the contractors decided to produce furniture items that were below the required standard.
He said that the ministry would not accept such furniture and therefore directed those that had produced and delivered the sub- standard items to remove them from the schools and start afresh if they wanted to be paid.
The commissioner appealed to those that had not delivered to ensure that they produced the items according to specification.
On pressure being mounted on him to accept the sub- standard items, Professor Muoboghare reiterated his earlier appeals and warnings to contractors that the era of doing shoddy jobs for the ministry was over , adding that his mission to the ministry was a call for positive change.
He used the occasion to warn some staff of the ministry who connived with shady contractors to defraud the state government to desist forthwith in their own interest, saying that the ministry would not hesitate to deal with them severely.
The commissioner also stated that the policy of the benefiting school Heads and the Chief Inspectors of Education to certify completed jobs was still in force and therefore directed all concerned to take note.
Professor Muoboghare had earlier directed the contractors that produced the 256 two- seater desk and 20 teachers tables and chairs for St. Paul’s Grammar School, Ebu and 300 two seater desks for Okwe Primary Schools I and II, Okwe to remove them from the schools immediately.
