TRANSPORT COMMISSIONER CAUTIONS AGAINST OVER SPEEING, USE OF WORN OUT TYRES

The Delta State Commissioner for Transport, Sir Vincent Uduaghan has cautioned against over speeding and the use of worn and expired tyres to safeguard the lives of motorists and passenger. The commissioner gave the warning after observing how private car owners and drivers of public transport operators over-speed due to the smoothness and wideness of some roads in the state. Sir Uduaghan explained that people tended to over-speed because of having good tyres (brand new) and sometimes for the fun of it while some always time themselves and boast of their high engine capacity, thereby going late to events and occasions and indirectly turning our roads to a racing track. He called on motorists to exercise high level of disciple while on the wheels because of their lives, that of passengers and other road users warning that accidents could result in permanent disability and sometimes death. The transport commissioner said that the State Governor, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa meant well for motorists, passengers and other road users by ensuring that our roads were put in good condition, recalling that recently, pockets of fatal accidents involving lives have reared their ugly heads on our roads. The Commissioner charged motorists and drivers of public transport operators to ensure that they operated with good tyres and maintain the required standard speed limit, as well as making sure that the mechanical and electrical conditions of their vehicles were in order. Sir Uduaghan enjoined motorists to always observe proper rest before embarking on journeys and advised against intake of alcohol and drugs, saying that they could induce sleep while on the wheel. He stated that the raining season was around the corner, adding that motorists should endeavor to change their faulty wipers and dead bulbs and ensure to always use their indicators rightly. The commissioner appreciated the management and staff of DESTMA for their effective control and management of traffic during major events in the state capital as well as the VIO, FRSC personnel and security agencies in the state
