President Goodluck Jonathan the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won the 2011 Presidential election polling a total of 22,496,157 votes as against 12,214,529 polled by General Muhammadu Buhari of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) followed by Nuhu Ribadu of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)with 2,088,791; and Ibrahim Shekarau of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) gaining 917,365 Nigerian Votes.
President Jonathan also polled 60 percent from the 37,716,842 total votes cast out of Nigeria’s registered 73 million voters. He also garnered 25 percent in 32 states and the FCT and surpassed the mandatory minimum 2/3 requirement of the total votes cast.
The states he did not meet the 25 percent target are Bauchi, Borno, Kano and Yobe.
Dr. Jonathan won in all the 17 states in the South except in Osun State (Southwest) which went to Nuhu Ribadu of the ACN.
Jonathan also won in 7 Northern states (Adamawa, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Plateau, Taraba) and the FCT Abuja.
On the other hand, General Buhari won in only 12 states of the federation which coincidentally are in the North.
His performance in the South was extremely poor.
He won in Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kaduna, Niger, Yobe, Sokoto and Zamfara.
Ibrahim Shekarau did not win any state.
