MRAKPO REMINDS JUSTICES OF PEACE OF APPOINTMENT AS CALL TO DUTY
The Delta State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr Peter Mrakpor has challenged all appointed Justices of the Peace by the State Government to see their appointments as a clarion call to serve humanity and promote peace and harmony in society.
The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice made this known when he granted audience to the newly elected President of the Association of the Justices of the Peace (AJP), Chief Paul Chidi Okpor who led other members of the newly inaugurated executive on a courtesy visit on him.
Barr Mrakpor while congratulating Chief Paul Okpor and his 36 executive members on their election and subsequent inauguration reminded them of their sacred duties to the people and government of the state which he said was for the entrenchment of peace, security and harmony in the state.
He said that their appointment followed stringent laid down procedures including security screening to ensure that only qualified persons with proven integrity and outstanding character were appointed.
The Justice Commissioner who expressed delight on the conduct of the election which he described as rancor free, commended the immediate past president of the Association, Chief (Dr) Godday Ogagarojor for his dedication, doggedness and tireless efforts in moving the Association forward.
On their demands for a piece of land for the building of the Justices of the Peace House, subvention for the day to day running of the Association and donation of operation vehicle, the Attorney-General promised to look into their request for land but declined to commit the Ministry in respect to their demand for operational vehicle due to paucity of funds, saying that the Ministry and the State Judiciary were also grappling with the challenge of vehicles.
Earlier, the new President of the Association, Chief Paul Okpor, disclosed that himself and other 36 executive members were elected on the 21st of December, 2017 during their Annual General Meeting held at Warri to pilot the affairs of the body.
He pleaded with the Justice Commissioner to use his good offices to provide the Association with the right atmosphere for its advancement.
Chief Okpor who expressed optimism that the Association could generate revenue for the state if the right atmosphere was created for it, commended the State Government for meeting some of their requests in terms proper identification and recognition.
While requesting the Attorney-General to consider setting a day aside as Justice of the Peace Day to further create awareness as well as generate funds, Chief Okpor solicited for the involvement of Justices of the Peace in Government programmes, especially in the area of peace and security.
